Why is the iPod so popular?

Guy Browning at the Guardian says our earnest need for silence is the reason for the success for iPod.
And, the Walkman before that.
How true. Though I have seen a few who are listening to their Walkman or whatever, and talking loudly at the same time.
Guy says,
Silence is the only time you can really hear yourself think.
